Origins and Faiths in Flowers and Deities
The first two clicks decide the loot you are allowed to want.
Origins and faiths are the character creation screen that actually matters. Everything after them is editing. The Steam page says you choose from four origins and faiths that define the playstyle from the first fight. Launch day unlocked all eight character archetypes and four faith paths. This page names only what public English sources showed, then tells you how to read a portrait the wiki has not seen.
Pair this with Starter Builds when you want a shopping list, and with Getting Started when you have not finished the tutorial.
Verified origins from the demo
Destitute Noblewoman. Servants, slings, a slave, shield bearers, feathered warriors. She looks “weak” and then wins because cheap Favor fillers let you finish series three. Her build question is: who is the wall, and which servant is allowed to die for blood?
Young Warrior. Encouragement, a precise balanced field: spears, shields, slings, archers. He is the tutorial in commander form. Take him if you want to learn ranks before you learn a gimmick.
Iron Bulwark. Encouragement again, but heavy armor. He wants the loot tags that say heavy armor and the Forge bundles that look boring. Dodge ornaments are a trap unless a blessing later says otherwise.
Tribal Survivor. Crit, dodge, light armor, Beast-Marked blade wielders, savage skirmishers, club bearers, poison darters. The public gameplay video picked him and then never looked back. He is not secretly banned in 1.0; he is just the most recorded origin.
If 1.0 shows extra portraits, use the same read: starting roster, armor class, and the verb on the card (encourage, dodge, servants). That verb is the origin. The subtitle is flavor.
Verified faiths
Feathered Serpent / Quetzalcoatl. Strengthening and healing. Demo spells included rain-like heals and a calmer blood graph. You will win ugly fights because the wall stands up one more time. You will lose shade-heavy item value because fewer of your units die. That is a fair trade.
Flayed Lord. Bleed and wounds. Items that transfer wound stacks or spawn Bloodshades on death suddenly look like scripture. Dry arenas are your enemy; messy trades are your friend. Read How Blood Works before you take this idol “because it looks metal.”
Two more faith paths exist in 1.0. We will not guess their Aztec or rainforest names. Right-click the idol. If the text says healing, weather, death, or hunt, you already know which loot tags to click on the map.
How origin and faith should argue
Good pairs share a loot tag. Tribal Survivor plus Quetzalcoatl is dodge plus heal, which the recorded run used to face jaguar demons. Tribal Survivor plus Flayed Lord is dodge plus wounds, which wants different ornaments and a dirtier front. Noblewoman plus Flayed Lord can feed the faith with cheap deaths. Iron Bulwark plus a heal faith is a castle. Iron Bulwark plus bleed needs a plan for generating corpses that are not your only wall.
Bad pairs fight over the Forge. If the origin wants light armor and the faith wants you to stand still and be hit, every shop node becomes an argument. Pick a winner before column two.
Archetypes versus origins
Store copy mentions 12 tactical archetypes. Launch notes mention 8 character archetypes. Those may be different lists: starting commanders versus mid-run build directions the blessings push you toward. Next Fest said all 80 blessings were redesigned to give clearer build directions. Treat an archetype name on a blessing as a signpost, not as a second origin you must restart to satisfy.
The Blessings page is where those signposts are collected. The Origins Tier List is a blunt ranking of the verified four plus a warning about incomplete 1.0 data.
When in doubt, lock the pair on the run planner and do not reroll the religion after the first promotion. A mid-campaign faith crisis is how three-hour runs die in the item menu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from the current Steam build.
Are the four demo commanders the only origins?
They are the only ones we name. Launch unlocked more archetypes. Read a new portrait the same way: roster, armor class, verb.
Which faith is better for beginners?
Quetzalcoatl’s healing is more forgiving. The Flayed Lord is stronger if you already understand blood and want messy trades.
Can I change faith mid-run?
You can take blessings and loot that lean another way, but the starting idol still owns your early spells. Do not chase a second religion.
What is the difference between an origin and an archetype?
Origin is the commander you lock at the start. Archetype text on blessings is a mid-run direction. Official counts for the two lists do not match, so we keep them separate.
